“Unreported” and “Use of Force”
For the summer season, we opted to hold off on our planned Dichototee and instead create shirts informed by the recent protest movement. Between 2010 and 2019, 103 people were killed by the NYPD during the course of law enforcement. Each case has their own story and varying public response.
Of these killings, 10 had no news coverage or description of the incident we could find other than the police notes contained in the annual NYPD ‘Use of Force’ and ‘Firearms Discharge’ reports. Consequently, no public response is registered for these deaths. Our shirts recognize two of these events, taking place on 12/8/2012 in Ridgewood, Queens and 6/29/2012 in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Visit the summer section of our ‘Clothing’ page to see the shirts.
We will also be highlighting one instance of NYPD use of lethal force per week based on our walk routes in an audio series called “Use of Force”. The name is taken from the above Use of Force reports the NYPD generates each year.
A complete mapping of all 103 deaths attributed to the NYPD from 2010-2019 can be found here.
