This third week of Bronx exploration we set our sites on Pelham Bay Park and City Island, two of New York's most fascinating locales. Along the way we'll be covering the expansive Woodlawn Cemetery as well as the northeastern Bronx neighborhoods, including Edenwalk, Co-Op City and more.
This week we set about enjoying the New York's preeminent Botanical Garden! When we're not wandering the grounds, we'll be covering a lot of Bronx city life as well, hitting the Hudson River coast in North Riverdale all the way down to the tip of Hunts Point and the East River. Not included in this route are 3 miles reserved for daily garden browsing.
Week one of our month in the Bronx brings us to perhaps the Bronx's most well-known attraction (outside the Yankees) - the Bronx Zoo! On either side we'll do tip to top walks from Southview Park in the south to massive Van Cortlandt park in the North. Neighborhoods visited include Fordham, Norwood, Soundview and Clason Point. 2.2 Miles were left off the route to account for zoo exploration.
Our first themed walk has us checking out two of New York's "other" Botanic Gardens during Cherry Blossom season. Cutting through Bed-Stuy and Prospect Heights brings us to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens early in the day. We don't rest on our laurels for long, heading up to Queens via MIddle Village and Rego Park to check out the Queens Botanic Garden. This walk is also an opportunity to get our first proper looks at Flushing Meadows and Forrest Parks, with paths that hug Meadow Lake and Willow Lake. We've left a mile off the drawn route to account for daily wandering in the gardens.
